The process depends on the quantity, condition, and method of delivery: 

• Preparation for Safe Transport 
  The PV modules must be prepared for transport in a secure manner. This means: undamaged, stacked, bundled, and easily accessible. 
• Alternative Solutions for Damaged Modules 
  For damaged modules—such as those damaged by storms or hail—PV CYCLE offers suitable loading systems (boxes, containers, walking floor) that enable safe collection. 
• Customized Pickup 
  For larger quantities (> 20 modules), PV CYCLE arranges nationwide pickup directly from your location. 
• Municipal Waste Disposal for Individuals 
  Small quantities (< 20 modules) can be disposed of free of charge by private individuals at the municipal recycling center.

For every disposal carried out by PV Cycle, you will receive a free certificate of disposal confirming the proper recycling of your end-of-life modules.

PV CYCLE differs from other take-back systems in several key ways that underscore our strong commitment to sustainability, innovation, and environmental responsibility—particularly in the field of photovoltaic systems: 

1. Specializing in end-of-life photovoltaic equipment
   
   PV CYCLE is the first global organization to have established a system for the collection and recycling of photovoltaic modules as early as 2007—long before the take-back obligation under the EU WEEE Directive came into effect in 2014.
   We are one of the few players that have consistently specialized in PV modules as well as ancillary equipment such as inverters and storage systems.
   
   
2. Comprehensive EPR Compliance
   
   PV CYCLE supports manufacturers, importers, and first-time distributors of PV products in fulfilling their obligations under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in the EU and beyond (e.g., South Africa). This includes the legally compliant organization of collection, recycling, and financing for the end-of-life phase of these products. 
   
   
3. Technologically Realistic Recycling Strategy
   
   Our approach follows the principle of “Best Available Techniques Not Exceeding Excessive Costs (BATNEEC).” This means we rely on recycling processes that are economically viable while also enabling the highest possible material recovery rate—particularly for laminated flat glass. 
   
   There is only one legal definition for “recycling” and “recovery.” Terms such as “downcycling,” “high-value recycling,” or “high-tech recycling” are not legally defined and originate more from social media parlance—not from circular economy practice.
   
   
4. Independence and Market-Driven Approach
   
   PV CYCLE operates without subsidies and promotes competition among certified recycling facilities. This ensures that costs for manufacturers are minimized while meeting statutory environmental targets. 
   
   
5. Extensive network of participants
   
   Our take-back system is supported by a strong network of manufacturers, importers, retailers, and installers who collectively fulfill their responsibilities in the spirit of the circular economy. This collective approach creates synergies and reduces costs.
   
   
6. International Reach
   
   Unlike many take-back systems limited to a single country, PV CYCLE has offered cross-border services from the very beginning. We flexibly adapt our services to regional and local laws—both within and outside Europe. 
   
   
7. Awareness-raising and education
   
   PV CYCLE is actively committed to raising awareness among manufacturers, local governments, and the general public about the importance of sustainable disposal of PV modules. This includes training materials, information campaigns, and educational programs.
   
   
8. Transparent Processes
   
   Our approach is transparent and easy to understand. Members gain insight into our collection and recycling processes, as well as the recovery rates of the facilities we use.

   We work closely with research institutes and universities to develop innovative processes for the treatment and recovery of PV modules, thereby continuously improving the recycling rate.

The PV CYCLE logo may appear on informational materials or, in some cases, on the backs of solar modules. But what does it mean? Here’s a brief explanation: 

Two periods in the history of PV CYCLE 

2007–2013 
During this period, PV CYCLE was a voluntary industry initiative supported by European industry associations and manufacturers. 

Members were permitted to use the logo onbrochures, manuals, and marketing materialsto demonstrate their involvement. 

Important: 

• The logo wasnever an official mark of conformity. 
• Its use on solar panels themselves wasnot recommended. 
• Funding for waste disposal was limitedto the current year—no provisions were set aside for future disposal costs. 

Since 2014 

With the entry into force of the WEEE obligations (Extended Producer Responsibility), PV CYCLE has transformed itself into aservice-providing organization. Today, members receive comprehensive EPR compliance solutions. 

• The same rule applies today: The logo mayonlybe usedin informational materialsto demonstrate active participation. 
• Labeling on solar modulesis stillnot recommendedand hasnot been approvedby PV CYCLE. 
• The logo doesnot prove that a particular module or brand is part of a functioning waste management system. 

Important Note 

The PV CYCLE logo is a registeredtrademark in the EU and many other countries. 

PV CYCLE actively takes action againstthe improper or misleading useof its logo. 

Conclusion 

• The PV CYCLE logo indicatesparticipation in a take-back system—butdoes not guarantee automatic disposal.

Product pirates are companies that do not comply with the legal obligations under the WEEE Directive (EU-27, UK)—that is, they assume no or insufficient responsibility for their electrical and electronic equipment or photovoltaic modules, yet give the false impression that they do by using third-party intellectual property. 

Typical characteristics of such companies: 

• Use of the names or logosof certified take-back systems (e.g., PV CYCLE) without actually being a member 
•  Sale of products(e.g., solar panels, inverters, batteries) without a registration and take-back system 
• Distortion of competition, as they do not bear disposal costs and are therefore able to offer lower prices on the market 
• Misleading the market andcustomers—they often give the impression that their disposal practices comply with the law 

Consequences 

Failure to comply withthe legal requirements regarding Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)constitutesanadministrative offense or a criminal offenseand may be punishable by: 

• substantial fines 
• criminal prosecution (e.g., prison sentences) 
• Trading bans or sales suspensions in affected countries 

Notice 

PV CYCLE actively promotesfair competition and a legally compliant circular economy, and assists authorities in identifying and prosecuting free riders.
